The One Packing Hack That Changed My Life

You’re a chronic overpacker. You don’t mean to be, you start out with the best of intentions, but everytime you end up with a bursting suitcase you’ll have to check. Or two. 

But maybe you’re determined to change your ways. And You’ve scoured the internet looking for packing hacks. 

You’ve tried rolling. And folding. And stacking. And packing cubes. And outfit planning. And carry-on only. But you still find yourself the night before your plane leaves, sitting in a heap of clothes on your bed with an overflowing suitcase in front of you, wondering how you can make this work. 

It sucks. I’ve been there. 

My first big trip abroad, a 6 week trip to Europe, I ended up with FOUR yes, FOUR bags. A suitcase, a duffel, a backpack and a giant messenger bag. And let me tell you, hauling all of that through multiple cities and train stations in Europe, (not to mention the rustic hotels with no elevators) made me realize I needed to seriously reconsider my ways. 

So like you, my brave reader, I tried out all the packing hacks. Really. All of them. And nothing stuck. 

And then I started to think……

Maybe this isn’t about how to fit in 3 extra pairs of pants by rolling or how to get extra heavy coats through by wearing them on the plane. This is really about packing too much stuff in the first place. 

Revolutionary, I know. But stay with me here. 

The deeper issue with my chronic overpacking (and I’m guessing yours too) was the whole game of “what if I need this” inevitably played within 48 hours of departure. 

So really, there’s only one thing you need to do to change the way you pack forever. 

The ultimate packing hack.

Pack two months in advance. 

Ridiculously simple, right? But it works. 

No more panicked questioning, no more throwing things in at the last minute, just plenty of time to lay out everything you want and get over the emotional pain of not bringing the cute maxi skirt you know you’re never going to wear before you try to stuff it into the water bottle pocket of your backpack at 11:58 the night before you leave. 

With this hack I went from packing 4 bags to taking just a 26L backpack for a ten-day long trip to Spain. 

This. Shit. Works.
